Uneventful day visually other than this shot, spent the day practicing crap-vis-nav. Went up Easy Gully to make a change from Jack's Rake then intended to set off for High Raise and Sergeant Man fromThuncarr Knott. Was lost most of the time, relocated then followed path back to Thunacar Knott. Big lump loomed out of the mist which, though it looked like Pike of Stickle far away, was obviously Thunacar Knott close up. WRONG. It didn't get any less like the Pike, the nearer I got and I was eventually forced to abandon any fantasy that it was The Knott. After 10 minutes on my knees over the map, I worked out that I had never set off from Thunacar Knott in the first place but had fallen short of it on some rocky outcrop. Everything I had done after that was a route parallel to my intended line.
I had had a very successful day the day before, navving around Lower Man, Whiteside and Raise and learnt nothing other than I was a crack navigator.
This day of fail upon fail taught me much more. The main thing I learnt was not to be complacent with the 'easy bit', you absolutely must know where you are at the start when you set off on a wild leg.
